INTENTION OVER TRADITION

WEDDINGS FOR MODERN & MIXED-CULTURE COUPLES

In 2022 I married the love of my life, Sophie, in a Hindu ceremony.

Although our traditional priest did a wonderful job, there were some aspects that didn't feel fully true to us. I remember feeling like a bit of an impostor - hoping he would turn a blind eye to me not being a 'traditional Hindu', and Sophie being White British.

Now as a pandit myself, I believe you shouldn't have to pretend to be something you're not to have a cultural ceremony.

Instead, it's about hearing what the rituals mean to you and celebrating that - whether that's honouring your family's roots, creating a deeper sense of spiritual connection as a couple, or sharing your heritage with family and friends from other backgrounds.

A more spiritual approach, valuing intention over tradition, while still respecting the religious foundations.

INTENTIONAL

As a pandit, I believe that this ceremony has most power and meaning when we're intentional about why we're carrying out each ritual. For that reason, I’m very open to adapting the ceremony to ensure it’s reflective of your values, while still honouring any traditions important to your family. This may mean shortening the overall ceremony length, integrating Western / fusion elements, or updating the commentary to remove patriarchal cultural layers.

INCLUSIVE

A big part of my role is to guide your guests on a journey through the culture alongside the story of your relationship. My weddings are led predominantly in English, with short, symbolic Sanskrit chants, so it feels accessible and relatable for guests of all backgrounds. For mixed-culture couples, my starting approach is to wholeheartedly celebrate the coming together of your cultures as an intentional part of the ceremony.

FUN

Your wedding day is a celebration! The two of you, along with your loved ones celebrating with you, should enjoy the ceremony as much as any other part of your wedding - for me, that means ensuring every single person feels involved, engaged and like they're actively participating. It's about capturing the energy that any pre-wedding events have built up to, and ensuring it's carried forward through the rest of your big day.

MY BACKGROUND

After 3 years working in the wedding industry, co-running my wife Sophie's wedding veil business, I'm so excited to be working even more closely with couples as a Hindu wedding priest.

Growing up in a non-traditional Brahmin family in North West London, Hinduism played a big part in my upbringing in the form of cultural celebrations and family gatherings centred around kathas/poojas.

In recent years, spirituality has become a central and ever-present part of my life - helping me to find creative flow, deeply connect with others, and manage my wellbeing.

While I'm early in my journey as a pandit, I've always loved public speaking and have lots of experience doing so within the corporate world - and on stage!

At home, I'm a self-confessed romantic, and am always trying to think of new ways to make Sophie smile.
